and presents. Credit cards are maxed and loans are obtained just to give,
not just children, but adults the gifts that they want. This is also the time of
year that most retailers depend on to make up for slow periods of the year.
Have we gone too secular when it comes to the types of decorations that we
put up in our homes? So many people go out and get a tree and bring it back
to put up in their homes. The tree is secured so that it doesn't fall and then
decked with silver and gold. We even put an angel on top. After all decorations
are put on the tree, we look at it in awe.
Putting up a tree in our homes and decking it with silver and gold is something
that God has told us not to do. Jeremiah 10:3-4 states "For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of
the workman, with the ax. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it
with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
Then there is Santa Claus. Santa Claus is supposed to be based on the history
of a rich man named Bishop St. Nicholas who secretly gave money to a poor
family. How interesting is it that the word Santa has the same letters in it as
Satan. Even more interesting is the fact that the word Claus is in the beginning
of the word claustrophobia.
Although, drawings depicting Santa Claus years ago didn't show him wearing
a suit with the majority of it being red, it now does (Revelation 12:3). He comes
down a chimney where fire often exist (Revelation 20:10 and Matthew 25:41).
The worst part is more and more children are believing in asking Santa and
they shall receive instead of asking God and they shall receive (Matthew 7:7).
There is a song that says Santa "sees you when you're sleeping, he knows
when you're awake, he knows when you've been bad or good". That sounds
like God, but the song is about Santa Claus.
Of course we want our children to get into the habit of believing in something,
but with all the hype of the media, the first thing a child thinks of when they think about Christmas is Santa and getting gifts? Although, December 25 has not
been biblically proven as the birth date of Jesus, any day is a good day to remember Him.
