past pop back up at the worst possible time in our lives. If we don't deal with
our past, it will slowly eat at us and cause us to be bitter about life in general.
We all know that we can't go back in time and change the things that we wish
we could change. If we all know that to be true, then why is it so hard to just let
the past go? The reason for some is because they see their past as being
responsible for the current lifestyle they are having to live. They torment
themselves by thinking "if I hadn't done that I wouldn't be going through this".
We put too much focus on why we are where we are instead of focusing on
what we can do to get to where we want to be. What you think about the most
is either going to help you or hinder you. If you think mostly about your past,
you will always be living in the past while hindering your future at the same
time.
The way to get over your past is through forgiveness. Forgiving others is so important, but it is also important to forgive ourselves. There is nothing you
can do to change the past. Everybody has a past that they are not happy
about. Accept your past as a lesson learned and focus on the life you are
currently living.
When you don't forgive yourself you are putting yourself in the same situation
that Lot's wife did. Don't look back at your past the way Lot's wife did (Genesis 19:26). She turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back. It is hard to
look backwards and walk forward at the same time. When you look back you
are less likely to walk forward because you can't see what's in front of you.
God is an expert when it comes to forgiveness (Isaiah 43:25). Ask God to help
you forgive yourself. If you put your focus on God, you will soon realize that your
past won't bother you any more. When you focus on God, you begin to see things
differently. As you start to see things differently, it will be much easier to let go of your past.
