Some people measure their success in life by how many material things they
have. There are those that think they have a better life than someone that has
less than they do. Some people feel bad because they don't have what someone else has. People will steal and kill just to have material things.
There are some that believe that by a certain age certain things should have already been accomplished or acquired. We hear so much about obtaining material things, but rarely hear about obtaining spiritual things. Yes we are in
this world, but do we have to do what everybody else is doing? Seems like it's
all about going to college, getting a good job, buying a house, and buying a car.
We call that having everything.
Having everything should include spiritual things as well. You don't have
everything if you are abundant when it comes to material things, but bankrupt
when it comes to spiritual things. That's why people can have everything or everyone they ever wanted in their lives, but still feel lonely or like something
is still missing (Proverbs 3:13-18).
As we are working hard for the things we want we need to remember that
those things are on the outside of us and can only bring us temporary joy.
On our quest for material things there is nothing wrong with being on a
quest for spiritual things as well. We have to make a personal choice
to build ourselves up spiritually because this world and television is not
going to pound it into us.
Everything you see on television or hear on the radio is about material gain
and very little about spiritual gain. It seems for some, it brings them so much excitement to sleep outside an arena for a football game or music concert,
but they can't make it to worship service on time. When they have gotten themselves into trouble the first words out of their mouths is "God please
Don't let not having a nice car, house, clothes, or high paying job make you
feel like a failure. You are not any less important than someone who has all
those things. Material things are not bad, but it's when we become obsessed
with material things that it becomes a problem (Mark 8:36). We should value knowledge and wisdom more than we do (Proverbs 8:10-11). If you are happy
with what you have and where you are in your life, that's all that matters.
